London step by step
I moved to London about a month ago. This is a small guide on how to get ready to leave and arrive in London without difficulties and then get settled. Because I live near Torino. I have flown with Ryan Air from Caselle Airport. Compared to other airlines such as Easy Jet or British Airways, is the only one that offers the cheapest fares to the United Kingdom.
However I suggest to be careful with carrying too many Kilos, as otherwise the risk of losing the benefits of a low cost company can occour.Hence my advice is to check the weigh of your luggage and if there are kilos in excess you may want to choose British Airways instead.
If you take low cost airlines you are likely to arrive at Stansted airport. At the Airport you have two options :either you take the train or the bus. They both take you to central London. I took the bus that with 9 pounds takes you to London in about one hour. I'm going to divide this guide in 6 points:
1) Transport
2) Accommodation
3) Bank
4) Work
5) Health
6) Course of English
1) At the arrival it is advisable that you subscribe immediately to a Travel card. You can either choose one for only buses or both subway and buses. All the info can be found at theTransport for London's website.
At station just ask for an Oyster card and complete the relative application form.
2) Accommodation is a fundamental thing. My advice is don't take it from Italy, but look for it while on site. This is to avoid staying at squallid places, not confortable and cleaned at all.The research can be made either through websites such as the English Gumtree or Italian websites such as: italiani a Londra, italiansunited. Usually to rent a room, a deposit is required. The rent can be payable either weekly or monthly. The prices can range from 85 to 150 pounds per week, depending on the zones and on the house .You need to check if the bills are included or not because it makes the differences.
3) Opening a bank account without a job is not an easy task. However there is a bank that allows you to do so and this is called Lloyd. You just have transfer some money on it and have a valid passport.
4) To get a Job , my advice is to create a CV in english with a cover letter. You must include your address and phone number on that.To get an english mobile phone number you should just go into a shop and buy an UK sim card pay as you talk at the cost of 5 pounds which usually comes with some. When you have a Cv and a english mobile phone number, you should subscribe to some of the greatest online recruitment sites such as: Monster Jobsite Reed Gumtree Jobserve To work in Britain legally you'll need a Nin (National Insurance Number). The fastest way to get it this is to call this number 0845 600 0643 between 8.00am and 6.00pm Monday to Friday. An operator will ask you about your: *Name *Last name *Address *Phone *When you came to London He may also ask if you have a job/if you are offering employment or if you are looking for it. After that you'll be given an appointment. Please remember to bring your passport and proof of address.Your Nin will be sent to you within month.
5) If you want to become patient of your local doctor called GP(General Practitioner) you have to visit NHS website. Then select “GP” at the top right and enter the postcode of your area. You'll see a list of clinics that serve your zone. If you call one of these,an operator after having requested your personal information, will book you a visit with the doctor. Before the visit you must fill in a form and take this with you on the day of your visit to register, along with the passport.
6) If you're interested in attending an English school during your stay in london. My advice is to see Education in UK,or to check at Callan School. The first week of trail is free. Good Luck!
